This site contains the principal writings of Anders Chydenius, an eighteenth-century pioneer of freedom and democracy, translated into English by Peter C. Hogg.
He was a clergyman, Member of Parliament, economist, and one of Finland’s first exponents of economic liberalism. He is most remembered as an outspoken defender of freedom of trade and industry, the “Adam Smith of the North.” The Young Anders Life The Age of Utility at Alaveteli Life Chydenius and Gustavus III Life An Orchestral Pioneer Life Chydenius and the World Hereafter Pictures The Church Hill in Kokkola Writings Anders Chydenius’s central writings Literature Selected literature in English Known as the Adam Smith of the North, Anders Chydenius laid out his economic prescription for mercantilist [Sweden-Finland] in The National Gain in 1765, suggesting a concept of spontaneous order eleven years before Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations: “Every individual spontaneously tries to find the place and the trade in which he can best increase National gain, if laws do not prevent him from doing so.” The 18th‐century writer, politician, and clergyman Anders Chydenius is one of the great founding fathers of Nordic classical liberalism. He played a crucial role in repealing restrictive economic policies, promoting religious toleration, and most importantly, abolishing censorship and protecting free speech. Anders Chydenius was the leading classical liberal of Nordic history. Born in Sotkamo, Ostrobothnia, Sweden (today in northeastern Finland) and having studied under Pehr Kalm at the Royal Academy of Åbo, Chydenius became a priest, Enlightenment philosopher and member of the Swedish Riksdag of the Estates. Anders Chydenius once again participated in the Diet, at which the position of servants was brought up, leading to him championing the rights of the servant class. Anders introduced a bill whereby foreigners were also granted limited rights to practice their own religion, which was a suggestion made by King Gustav III. Anders Chydenius (Swedish: ; 26 February 1729 – 1 February 1803) was a Finnish priest and a member of the Swedish Riksdag, and is known as the leading classical liberal of Nordic history.
